Board Game Design Focuses on Youth Mental Health
Two students from the Diploma of Foundation Studies (Design) designed a board game called “Emotional Synchronization” for the Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), which was recently released. The students used visual depictions and design techniques to create various game cards, helping players easily express their feelings when facing different scenarios and challenges. This facilitates emotional expression and enhances communication.
Last month, at a board game sharing session held at the Sha Tin Town Hall, Mr. Leeo LAU Chun-kit, a lecturer from the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) (Kwun Tong), shared the students' design concept. Nearly a hundred teachers and social workers from primary and secondary schools in the Sha Tin district were among the first to try out the game. Each participant received a boxed copy of “Emotional Synchronization” board game, which they are encouraged to apply in their work to support students' emotional needs.
At the event held last week, the students led the public in trying out the game at the plaza outside the Sha Tin Town Hall. During the session, children and parents actively expressed their feelings. Many parents and children gained a better understanding of each other's emotions and responses to different situations and challenges through the board game, promoting mutual communication and interaction.
Designers CHEUNG Yuen-wa and SHEA Chung-hei expressed their delight. Cheung said, "We hope this board game continues to be promoted in the community, fostering mutual understanding and helping players express their emotions."
