Multi-functional Learning Kit – Unleash Learning Potential for Children in Subdivided Flats
Recently, VTC Community Engagement Unit (CEU) partnered with Design Discipline and the Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service (BOKSS) to arrange for students from the Department of Architecture, Interior and Product Design at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) to design a "Multi-functional Learning Kit" (Learning Kit). After a selection meeting last year, teachers and students worked diligently to refine the design, which is now in production. Lu's Foundation provided sponsorship for the production of 100 Learning Kit, which will be donated to children living in subdivided flats, improving their learning conditions.
On 8 March, three award-winning design students, along with representatives from CEU, BOKSS, and the Lu's Foundation, visited families in subdivided flats and delivered the Learning Kit, and shared tips on how to use it. During the visit, HKDI students from the Higher Diploma in Furniture and Lifestyle Product Design exchanged drawing ideas with the children, bringing smiles to everyone’s faces.
HKDI student Meghan WONG said, "In the early phase, social workers of BOKSS arranged a visit to low-income families in Tsuen Wan for me and my classmates. I recalled one of the children who loved to draw, but it was challenging given the cramped living conditions. Therefore, I integrated a drawing aid into the design that combines lighting, a drawing board, and storage for stationery, hoping to provide an enjoyable user experience."
The Learning Kit is not only a portable writing desk, but also equipped with a light board that allows students to place drawing paper on it for tracing calligraphy or artwork, facilitating learning at night. Students can store stationery and papers inside, and when not in use, the kit can be folded up, making it both practical and space-saving for low-income families.
The Learning Kit is made from eco-friendly wood, which is both safe and stylish. The legs can be pulled out, allowing students to place the kit on their laps to read or draw at home.
BOKSS will then distribute the Learning Kits to families in need, improving children's learning conditions. In addition, a launch event for the project will be held next month. Stay tuned!
