Description
"Small Design, Big Impact" Helping Children in Subdivided Flats Expand Their Learning Horizons
In collaboration with the Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service (BOKSS), students from the Department of Architecture, Interior and Product Design of Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) have officially launched the "Multi-functional Learning Kit" designed for children living in subdivided flats. On 12 April, BOKSS held a launch and distribution event, presenting the finished product to over 30 children. The project received support from the LU's Foundation and the Lu Plaza, which sponsored the production of 100 kits that will be distributed to families in need.
During the launch, three HKDI students were awarded certificates of appreciation and souvenirs by BOKSS, and they shared their insights on stage, expressing their joy at contributing their VPET knowledge to the community. This thoughtfully designed kit combines storage, lighting, and drawing function, making it easier for children to study in their limited living spaces. One of the officiating guests, Keith TAM, Vice Principal of HKDI and IVE (Lee Wai Lee), stated, "This collaboration not only encourages students to care for the underprivileged but also connects the community through creative products."
Two young users, Huen Huen and Ching Ching, expressed, "The height of the kit is just right, allowing me to sit while doing homework instead of lying on the floor, and I don’t have to worry about my stationery falling on the ground."After the event, guests, teachers, and students interacted and shared experiences. The children were all happy to receive the kits, feeling the "big impact" brought about by this "small design."To view the nearly year-long production process involving students and community partners, please visit our YouTube channel:
