Creating Inclusive Retail Spaces Through Cross-sector Collaboration
CEU collaborated with the Engineering Discipline of IVE and the Hong Kong Physically Handicapped and Able-Bodied Association (HKPHAB) to carry out the project "Wheelchair-Friendly Fitting Room". After months of on-site research and design testing, the students recently submitted a design draft to HKPHAB and received high praise. Students from the Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering and Higher Diploma in Architectural Studies at IVE delved into multiple clothing stores across Hong Kong, analysing pain points such as fitting room space planning, door width, and auxiliary facilities, and referenced accessible design cases from overseas like the UK and Japan to propose innovative solutions tailor-made to the needs of wheelchair users in Hong Kong.
During their investigation, team members uncovered numerous hidden issues, such as improperly positioned emergency call buttons and mirror angles that prevent wheelchair users from viewing their entire outfit. Mr Szeto, a student of Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering at IVE, admitted, "These details are hard to imagine without firsthand observation." Ms Alvina CHOW the Executive Director of HKPHAB, pointed out that only a few clothing stores in Hong Kong are equipped with accessible fitting rooms. Many members lost their shopping desire due to inconvenient fitting experiences. She stated, "This project alleviates the psychological pressure on wheelchair users through thoughtful design, allowing them to try on clothes independently without assistance, truly realising the integration of physically handicapped and able-bodied."
The design plans will be fine-tuned based on feedback from wheelchair users, with the physical prototype expected to be completed by July. CEU is actively engaging with various industry partners to implement the design of wheelchair-friendly fitting rooms in fashion stores, promoting social inclusivity.
