CommunityQuest: Project Updates
3D Printing Express
Students of the Diploma of Vocational Education (Mechanical Engineering) from Youth College recently visited the transitional housing project operated by the Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service — CONCORDIA Tsat Sing Kong— with their “3D Printing Express”. They hosted a 3D printing workshop for residents who are currently on the waiting list for public housing.
The students used pipe connection techniques to construct shelving units, on which they placed 3D printers. They then taught participants how to design 3D printing digital files and print 3D models. The residents were thrilled to receive their self-designed creations right away and expressed appreciation for the students' thorough preparation and patient guidance.
Puzzle of Light - Jewelry Art Piece Making with People in Recovery
Students from HKDI Higher Diploma in Jewellery Design and Technology collaborated with BOKSS to create art pieces for several men in recovery. The students first met with them to understand their recovery stories and then used an object with significant meaning to them (found object) to transform their stories into artistic creations.
During the meetings, the participants shared their found objects with the students, with the memories and stories behind them. Some objects will become part of the art pieces, which the students are currently working hard to produce. Finished products will be exhibited in the community.
SAGES - The Smart Refrigerator
Four students of Higher Diploma in Software Engineering from Hong Kong Institute of Information Technology (HKIIT) recently visited the Kwai Shing Sheltered Workshop operated by New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association to explore the feasibility of implementing their competition project, "SAGES," in real-world scenarios. This project utilises artificial intelligence to train cameras to identify food items and is equipped with a camera on the refrigerator to monitor the quantity of food going in and out.
This ensures that the workshop’s trainees can restock and dispatch food in a timely manner. The student team stated that this site visit gave them deeper insights into how to improve the system. For instance, they discovered discrepancies between imagined packaging and actual products — beetroot juice, for example, comes in bags rather than boxes. They will now work towards enhancing the camera's accuracy.
