Smart Technology Connects Diamond Cab to Enhance Accessible Travel Experience
On 19 July 2025, Saturday, CEU partnered with Diamond Cab, Hong Kong’s first wheelchair-accessible taxi social enterprise to host a recognition ceremony. The event not only honoured a team of Diamond Cab drivers for their thoughtful and caring driving, but also acknowledged three VTC graduates who dedicated tremendous effort to developing DriveSense, an intelligent vehicle monitoring system.
DriveSense was developed by a collaborative team of teachers and students from VTC Smart City Innovation Centre and STEAM Education Centre, Hong Kong Institute of Information Technology (HKIIT), and Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) Engineering Discipline. The system utilises IoT sensors and GPS to collect real-time driving data, such as speed and location, and sends this data to the cloud for analysis. This enables Diamond Cab to monitor driver performance, including instances of sudden braking or sharp turns, ensuring a smoother and safer ride for passengers.
Graduates, who studied the Higher Diploma in Software Engineering and the Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering, shared the technical challenges they overcame during the development process. They expressed their excitement in applying their knowledge to benefit the community and learning to consider diverse community needs. They successfully and non-invasively installed the system in the Diamond Cabs.
Diamond Cab Chief Operating Officer Mr. Jim HO highlighted the meaningful impact of the collaboration. Through DriveSense’s data analysis, their team can evaluate drivers’ performance in driving safety, passenger service and attendance, thereby recognising the drivers’ ongoing efforts. This data also effectively supports the new driver training programme by helping them develop empathetic driving, optimise driving behaviour so as to enhance Diamond Cab’s service quality.
CEU hopes that DriveSense can be widely adopted in more forms of public transport, promoting smart transportation and allowing every passenger to enjoy a safe and caring journey.
