Streetathon 10th Anniversary: Illustrations Capture Runners’ Voices

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Hong Kong Streetathon, Community Engagement Unit (CEU) arranged for ten Higher Diploma in Illustration students from Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) to create unique illustrated portraits of ten runners from Hong Kong and other regions. Each artwork captures the runner’s personal feelings and reflections on Hong Kong and the spirit of running.

Using their visual storytelling and illustration design skills, the students created ten distinctive artworks inspired by runners from across Asia and Hong Kong. While each illustration features a unique style, many of them incorporate local elements. For instance, a runner from Thailand shared that she loves running along The Peak while taking in the city’s magnificence—a wonderful blend of urban energy and natural tranquility. She also mentioned that enjoying a delicious egg tart after a run feels like the perfect reward. Drawing from this story, HKDI student TSOI Yan-chit skillfully integrated both The Peak and the egg tart into his artwork, adding a local touch with vivid creativity.

The collection was exhibited at the Runners’ Expo held at the Kwun Tong Promenade. The showcase drew the attention of runners and visitors who paused to admire the artworks and take photos. During the event, HKDI teachers and students shared their creative process and design inspirations with the public. Postcards featuring student artworks were also produced and distributed to participants of the Streetathon.

On 23 November, the race day of the "Kerry Hong Kong Streetathon 2025", Mr Donald TONG, VTC Executive Director, Dr Elita LAM, HKDI Principal and Ms Jenny KO, VTC Academic Director of Student Development Discipline were invited to officiate the start of the "Asia YOUTHRUN 10K" alongside Dr Choi Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education and other guests. They waved large properties and joined in cheering on the runners at the starting line.

HKDI teachers, students, and CEU representatives were also invited to attend the runners’ party held on 22 November. Mr Andes LEUNG, Co-founder and CEO of RunOurCity presented certificates of appreciation to HKDI students, commending their efforts and creativity. He also praised the students’ designs for perfectly embodying the event’s theme—"Run Our Street, Draw your story"—by bringing warmth and energy to the runners’ journeys.
