VTC Hall of Residence (Tsing Yi) Spreads Warmth for Lunar New Year

The “New Year Festivity: The Spring Horse Arrives” workshop, held on 9 February by the VTC Halls of Residence (Tsing Yi), invited 14 elderly participants from the Hong Kong Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) Mr. & Mrs. C.F. Tao Neighbourhood Elderly Centre to visit the halls. They prepared festive New Year food and enjoyed interactive exchanges to welcome the Lunar New Year festival together.

The assistant wardens and resident students hoped that, through preparing traditional New Year treats such as fried sesame balls and smiling sesame cookie balls, they could build connections with the Tsing Yi community and convey festival warmth to the elderly. After the event, the elderly participants could take the handmade treats home to share with family and friends, while also helping more community members learn about VTC and the Halls.

Although many of the participating elderly have lived in Tsing Yi for a long time, they were previously unfamiliar with VTC and the Halls. This workshop allowed non-local resident students to deepen their understanding of the local community and build connections with the elderly. It showcased the capabilities of VTC students to the community. The workshop was guided by the assistant hall warden, who works at the Integrated Vocational Development Centre (IVDC), in making the New Year foods. Participants experienced firsthand how vocational and professional education and training (VPET) can connect with and serve the community.

The elderly greatly enjoyed the activity and the heartfelt interactions with the young resident students. One elderly participant over 90 years old warmly suggested the Hall and students to organise similar events in the future, proposing they make other dim sum or even visit elderly homes. At the end of the event, all participants wore various festive decorations for a group photo, bringing this warm intergenerational gathering to a perfect and touching close.
