Embracing Diversity: Non-Chinese Speaking Students Extend New Year Greetings – 2024 Jan Issue

Enabling VTC students from different ethnicities and backgrounds to showcase their talents and contribute to the Hong Kong community is one of the visions of the Community Engagement Unit (CEU). As we step into the new year, we collaborated with the VTC's Language Discipline and the Hong Kong Christian Service's Centre for Harmony and Enhancement of Ethnic Minority Residents (CHEER) to organise the "CHEER to CNY" event, aimed at preparing non-Chinese speaking students for the Lunar New Year.

In addition to the games, CHEER arranged a guest speaker of Nepalese descent to share his academic and career development experiences in Hong Kong, while the staff introduced various employment support and job matching services to the students.

The CEU recently launched a YouTube channel featuring the "Fun Classroom" series, in which several non-Chinese speaking students shared how to deliver gracious and appropriate New Year greetings in English. They also extended greetings in Urdu, Thai, and Filipino languages.

Healing Hearts by Singing, Songwriting, and Composing Music

Hanz David Kong, a graduate of HKDI Digital Music and Media programme, is a Chinese-Filipino young man who was born in Hong Kong. Despite his young age, he possesses remarkable musical accomplishments. In addition to singing and playing instruments such as guitar, bass guitar, and drums, he also composes songs. He frequently participates in various music productions and is dedicated to promoting cultural inclusivity through his music compositions. For instance, he once created a song about racial equality called "White Man Black Man" in response to a friend's experience of racial discrimination. Recently, Hanz performed in the "2023 Mental Health Month" carnival, where he deliberately selected songs related to friendship, intending to spread positive and loving messages. He expressed, "I feel relaxed when I sing, and the messages conveyed by the songs are positive. They make the audience reflect and encourage them to help others."

Establishing Community Partnerships

In order to create a tighter community network, the CEU actively engages with representatives from government departments, businesses sector, academic institutions, and non-governmental organisations. For example, recently, VTC Chairman, Mr Tony TAI, and the Academic Director of Student Development Discipline of VTC, Ms Jenny KO, participated in the exchange event organised by the Community Investment and Inclusion Fund (CIIF)'s Social Capital Institute. We are looking for diverse collaborative opportunities to showcase the value and contributions of vocational and professional education and training (VPET). If you are interested in any kind of collaboration opportunities, please feel free to contact us.

New Website and Channel

The CEU recently launched a website and YouTube channel, showcasing community activities and projects involving VTC students and teachers. If you want to know more about students' creativity and memorable experiences in community engagement, please visit the CEU website and subscribe our YouTube channel.
