Modern Design × Traditional Craftsmanship:  Fashion Culture Heritage at Lee Tung Avenue — December 2024

Cross-Generational Fashion Show: Showcasing the Fusion of Classic and Modern Charm

The Community Engagement Unit (CEU) and the Diploma of Vocational Education (Fashion) participated in the "Vintage Remix Fashion Show," organised by the cultural organisation Fusion HUB as one of the events of the youthfest@HK. The fashion show took place at Lee Tung Avenue in Wan Chai, featuring 12 professional models alongside 12 elderly models from The Salvation Army, presenting 24 classic outfits collaboratively created by students and teachers, in addition to students from the Diploma of Vocational Education (Image Design) who provided makeup services for the models.

Inspired by classic styles during 1940s to 1990s, the 24 outfits were designed by students of Youth College, in collaboration with skilled tailors, which the entire process took over three months. These creations not only reflected a blend of traditional and contemporary Hong Kong design and craftsmanship but also provided students with the opportunities to engage with the elderly.

Champion student CHEN Yat-nga remarked, "This competition not only deepened my understanding of fashion development over the decades but also allowed me to merge the elegant aesthetics of classical attire with modern design elements to create cross-generational garments. Seeing the smiles of the elderly models while wearing my pieces made me really happy!"

Having held the fashion show at the culturally rich Lee Tung Avenue was particularly meaningful. On the day, many people stopped by and admired the classic fashion accessories and designs created by the students. The professional performances of the models, along with the dazzling Christmas decorations and lights along the street, had made the classic fashion pieces shine even brighter.

The event was officiated by Mr Clarence LEUNG, Under Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, Ms WAN Ning, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government, Ms Christie HOO, Founder of Fusion HUB, Mr Jerry KWOK, Principal of Youth College, and Ms Jenny KO, Academic Director of VTC Student Development Discipline.

Mr Kwok said, "This event allows more people to understand the evolution and development of fashion industry in Hong Kong and appreciate the charm of our culture. More importantly, it inspires the new generation in the fashion industry to appreciate cultural heritage and innovation. I look forward to seeing the Youth College students contributing their professional skills to the community."

Gerontech and Innovation Expo: Showcasing 3D Printed Soft Meals for Seniors

In late November, we showcased two dim sum soft meals developed last year in collaboration with the Sik Sik Yuen at Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES) — Steamed Chicken Roll and Steamed Pork Ribs with Black Bean Sauce Rice. Although the students who developed the soft meals have graduated, they participated in the event to promote soft meals, demonstrate their preparation, and showcase a 3D-printed taro of the Steamed Chicken Roll. Lecturer of IVE Health and Life Sciences Discipline, Ms Esther LI said, "This demonstration is a valuable opportunity for both students and graduates, where they could interact with the public and industry professionals, gaining insights from other organisations involved in soft meal production."

The exhibition was themed "Care Food Gourmet Plaza”, allowing the public to experience the diversity and attractiveness of soft meals, challenging the traditional perception of them. Students from IVE Higher Diploma in Food Technology and Safety introduced soft meals to participants and conducted surveys for next year's soft meal project, Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, a classic Chinese dish. They also exchanged ideas with students from the Chinese Culinary Institute (CCI) and the International Culinary Institute (ICI), learning recipe design and seasoning mix.

CEU representatives actively engaged with various exhibitors to establish connections with potential community partners. The four-day expo featured over 220 exhibitors displaying more than 900 innovative gerontechnology products and solutions from Hong Kong and around the world, attracting over 35,000 visitors.

Designing Anti-Corruption Campaign Visuals for ICAC

Students from the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) studying Higher Diploma in Visual Communication participated in two visual design projects for the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), including " Online Anti-Corruption Campaign " and "ICAC Club Facebook Design”. Award-winning students were invited to attend the “ICAC Club” awards presentation ceremony last month in recognition of their outstanding contributions.

Gold Award winner for the " Visual Design for Online Anti-Corruption Campaign ", CHOW Ka- hei said, "The design applies a black-and-white colour tone and white light, depicting the character for 'corruption' within a prison setting. This visual metaphor highlights the shadows and dark aspects of corruption, emphasising its consequences and conveying the message of anti-corruption."
